My First Contest

The most amazing thing happened on Friday: exactly four months after my first post, I hit 100 followers!  (Thank you Kaylie for being #100!)  I never imagined that so many people would be interested in my blog, especially within such a short time frame.

To thank everyone for reading and commenting on my blog, I'm hosting a 100 Followers Contest.  Based on posts from across the blogosphere, it seems that people prefer simple contests.  Since I, too, like to keep it simple, my rules will be short:

1. You must be a follower to enter the contest.
2. You must enter a comment to this post.  Share with us a piece of writing advice that you've learned.

Although I'm not requiring that you post this contest on your blog, I'd appreciate it if you'd spread the word.

Entries will be accepted until midnight (MST) on May 31st.  I will use Random.org to choose one winning comment.  The winner will receive a $20 gift card from Barnes and Noble.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Congrats on the followers. My advice? Be true to and honest with your characters. They deserve it, you deserve it, and your readers deserve it.

Congratulations!! :D
My advice is to write what's in your heart. Don't feel pressured to write for the market, or to write for this person or that person... write what you ENJOY. There's no sense pursuing creative writing if it feels more like a chore.

Congrats! I wish I kept my contest this simple.

Advice...Take the time. Don't rush. Keep working, but make sure you take the time to really get to know your characters so you can do them justice. I haven't queried although I 'finished' my wip 2 years ago, because I keep learning new things about my MC.

Congratulations on the Big Blogging Milestone of 100 followers! When I hit 100 I was so excited. When I hit 200 I barely blinked. Now I'm stuck at 218 and wonder if I'll ever see 250!! So weird isn't it? I mean really, why do we care so much lol?

Here's my word of advice: Write and keep writing until you a clear, strong voice comes out in whatever you write.

Congratulations! That is so awesome.

My advice comes from listening to the podcast "I Should Be Writing" by the wonderful Mur Lafferty. "You're allowed to suck. Just write." The first draft is a single draft that is used to get out the story, so let it out and then make it better.

Congratulations! My advice -- just get it down, it doesn't matter if it's word vomit, just get it down. You can overhaul it later.

Woot! Can I just say that you are amazing? May I bask in your amazingness for awhile?

So, what I've learned about writing is that the only real way to get unstuck is to write. If I sit and think and wait for the ideas to come that will help me get from one place to another, I'll be sitting for a very long time. But, if I just write, even if it's word vomit (like Piedmont Writer said), it will lead me to a place where I am...unstuck.

Congrats Amy! My advice is something really specific but it works. When you're about to quit writing for the day, stop in the middle of a chapter, or scene. The next time you sit down to write, it'll be easier to pick up where you left off, rather than staring at a blank page at the beginning of the next scene or chapter.

Congrats, Amy! :D I will tweet about your contest too.

The best piece of writing advice I ever received was to just write through the crap. When nothing but crap is coming from your brain to your keyboard, just keep writing. Maybe you'll get a good paragraph out of it. Maybe all you'll get is a sentence or even a word or two. But the most important thing for a writer to do is to KEEP WRITING!!

Congrats on hitting the 100 mark! I'll post a link to your contest in my sidebar. :-)

Congratulations! 100 follower is great!

Advice: I've written some posts on writing tips on my blog, my favourite being how you can place your characters in unforseen settings to spice things up a bit. It's fun too - but better explained in my post:)

You can't get published if you don't finish what you write.---I can't remember where I heard that from.

Congratulations!! I will post a link on my sidebar.

My advice - to myself! - is not let my husband I've written until it's totally complete. Especially if it's anything YA or anything that remotely resembles my life in some manner. And to remember that really, no matter how interesting I think I may be, no one wants to read about me.

(Does that count?)

Twofold:

(1)Read, read, read, read, read.
(2)If you're serious about improving and publishing, writing is a large and core part of your lifestyle. You can't dabble; you can't put everything else first.

Awesome!

My advice: Write what you want, not what you think will sell. Never give up on your dreams!

My advice is to write. Write some more. Then sit down and write again. Carve out time in your schedule to write even if it's only a few minutes and you only write a few sentences. The more you write, the better you become.

I made this little bit of writing advice up myself, and to explain it I guess I should link it, but it's this: Feel big or go home.

Yes, I'm opinonated. Why do you ask? :)

Congratulations on the follower milestone, good lady. Keep up the good work!
